Developers of Bellevue’s Spring District today announced they have pre-leased their planned 213,000-square-foot Block 13 project in the growing district to Meta, previously known as Facebook.

It’s the fifth building in the Spring District to be leased by Meta, bringing its total leased space in the burgeoning area east of Interstate 405 to more than 1.4 million square feet, according to an announcement from Wright Runstad & Co. and Shorenstein Properties.

Combined with another 400,000-square-foot building Meta owns, the former REI Co-op headquarters, it is approaching 2 million square feet of office space in the Spring District.

Meta’s head of office for the Pacific Northwest and vice president of engineering, Rajeev Rajan, said over the summer that the Spring District might remind some people of Meta’s Silicon Valley headquarters for its concentration of buildings creating a campus feel.

The Block 13 project will be located between the former REI building and the University of Washington’s Global Innovation Exchange (GIX).

“Our teams in the Puget Sound region play a central role in building products for Meta,” Rajan said following the lease announcement. “With our presence in the Spring District, we’re eager to continue expanding to support Meta’s growing teams, and be a part of the region's vibrant community and strong business economy.”

Meta currently has more than 7,000 employees in the Greater Seattle region among its Bellevue, Seattle, and Redmond offices. It’s planning to welcome employees back to the office in January, both full-time in-person, and hybrid-remote.

The Block 13 project was designed by NBBJ and will be constructed by BN Builders as the general contractor. Construction will begin in 2022, with completion expected in 2024.

“The successful pre-lease of the Block 13 project further exemplifies the considerable demand for commercial space in the thriving Spring District,” Greg Johnson, CEO of Wright Runstad, said in the release. “We look forward to providing our tenants with the unique and industry-leading amenities they have come to expect from us.”

The Spring District is located on Sound Transit’s new light rail line opening on the Eastside in 2023 and includes a train station between 120th and 124th Avenues Northeast.

The Spring District also features more than 800 residential units and Bellevue Brewing Co.’s new location, which is scheduled to open in 2022.

Sound Transit, meanwhile, announced last month that it approved key transaction terms with separate developers to build almost seven acres of transit-oriented development just northwest of the light rail station. Plans call for affordable and market-rate housing, offices, retail, and public space in a project valued at more than $500 million.
